University of California Irvine Receives H2 Fueling Station Upgrade

Last week the University of California Irvine (UCI) received an upgrade to its hydrogen fueling station. Before the upgrade, the station was only able to dispense compressed hydrogen at 350 bar (5,000 psi). Since the upgrade, the station can now also dispense hydrogen at 700 bar (10,000 psi) as well. The higher pressures allow some of the newest hydrogen vehicle prototypes to travel for a longer range.

The UCI hydrogen filling station was manufactured and is being operated by Air Products, Inc. and they plan to add another upgrade in the near future. The next upgrade will allow the same fueling station to dispense liquid hydrogen as well as hydrogen gas at two different pressures. The companies that expect to refuel their vehicles at this facility include Toyota, Honda, Nissan and BMW. The first three automakers will be refueling with hydrogen gas and BMW will be refueling with liquid hydrogen when it becomes available.

I took a field trip to the Air Products hydrogen filling station in Irvine, California last week, to check out facility for myself and you can see photos by clicking on the link in this sentence.
